International Lab for Professional Directors

The six-week intensive Lab offers a unique opportunity to become the part of the international multidisciplinary artistic team and to take part in the performance production with Russian actors at Russian Drama Theatre.

The Lab is organized in the framework of the International Directing Lab - IUGTE Department which offers unique “launchpad” opportunities for directors from all over the world.

The programme is open to theatre directors 
with professional stage experience 

from different countries working in various creative genres, techniques and styles. 
If you have professional experience in directing, feel confident in guiding the actors and have a clear performance idea you dream to realize, IUGTE Lab offers a wonderful opportunity to take part in the performance creation with professional actors on the stage of Russian repertory theatre. 

The programme will be particularly relevant and valuable to experienced directors interested to find new international network opportunities and collaboration. 

The Lab objective is to create the fascinating encounter of different arts in multicultural and multilingual artistic environment and to encourage participants to go beyond what they already know or are used to apply in their work relying on and inspired by this unique collaboration. The creative team will consist of representatives from various professional backgrounds with different areas of expertise in performing arts - directors, actors, dancers, choreographers, film and video makers from different countries.

The programme will run six days per week full day long with one day-off per week.

As the result of the six-week Lab collaboration the performance will be created on the stage of Russian Drama Theatre. 


The performance will be based on the plays "Demetrius" by F.Schiller and "Boris Godunov" by A.Pushkin. The central figure of the production is the character of False Dmitry, the Tsar of Russia who was one of the three impostors (Russian: самозванец 'samozvanets', "impostor") and who claimed himself to be the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, tsarevitch Dmitriy Ivanovich. The False Dmitriy is one of the notable characters in Russian history and his personality still attracts the attention of historians, writers and poets its ambiguity and mystery. 

During the six weeks participants will become acquainted with the key principles of a director's preparation under Ostrenko Method, which is formed and inspired by the Russian Theatre Tradition. The programme  focuses on gaining the necessary practical tools in order to create a performance: analysis of the material and composition of the performance idea, composition of the form and the artistic space of the performance, development of a directing strategy, of a method of work with the actors and of a successful rehearsals planning. The understanding of the basic principles of a methodological directing approach concerns any genre, whether it is a drama performance, dance performance, physical theatre performance or musical theatre. 

Directors will gain helpful practical tools and valuable tips for mounting a contemporary performance, acquire a reliable practical toolkit for creating contemporary professional productions in limited rehearsal time. Participants will also acquire understanding of how the professional director can develop a variety of relationships with all kind of professionals - technical crew, artistic crew, performers, audiences, boards of management, etc. in order to develop a practical knowledge applied to a specific project in a repertory theatre. 

The Lab programme will run in two phases - the preparatory phase and the actual practical phase.


1) Preparatory Phase. Participants will receive the series of practical creative tasks by email and will send email reports on the completed tasks on scheduled basis.

2) Practical Phase. Participants will take part in the six-week intensive practical Lab at the Russian repertory theatre in the international team of directors and performers from different countries together with the Russian actors under the artistic direction of Sergei Ostrenko




LAB OBJECTIVES


- To provide unique international space stimulating creativeness;
- To create opportunity for new experience of creative collaboration in multicultural and multilingual theatre environment;
- To research practically the heritage of the Russian Theatre Tradition as the source of precious professional knowledge for directors in contemporary world of theatre;
- To inspire the artists to search for the universal “intercultural” language in contemporary performance;
- To provide a safe place for creative risks and challenging environment for new professional skills - on the way to light, creative and joyful acting in the limited rehearsal time.

The working languages are English and Russian (knowledge of one of the languages is sufficient).

CERTIFICATION
Participants who successfully finish the Lab can receive IUGTE Certificate.

REGISTRATION

The group is forming on a competitive basis. Only several spots are available.

Emerging directors who have demonstrated a talent for and commitment to directing however who have no experience of working with professional actors, and choreographers and performers who are keen to develop their directing skills and career, are welcome to apply for the Lab programme and may have the opportunity to take part in the rehearsal process as assistants.
