KRAGUJEVAC - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Indian Ambassador in Serbia Nengcha Lhouvum attended a performance by the famous Indian dance company Katak in the Knjazevsko-srpski teatar (Serbian Principal Theatre) in Kragujevac, central Serbia, late on Wednesday.
Pointing out that Serbia and India will continue developing their cooperation in the future, Nikolic told reporters that India and many other countries in the Far East nurture their tradition, history and culture through their everyday life. People in Serbia will also dance the traditional dances and sing folk songs, but it is completely different in India because the people of India nurture this as part of their tradition while we tend to forget our heritage a bit, Nikolic said after his visit to the theatre with his wife Dragica.
Underscoring that the show performed late on Wednesday presented one of the oldest Indian dances, the Indian ambassador noted that the dance is several thousand years old. This is not a special commitment to tradition and culture, this is a way of life in India, Lhouvum said and noted that the people of India nurture their heritage through everyday life and traditions.
The Indian dance show performed in the theatre tells of ancient goddesses and it was inspired by the writings from Rig-Veda, one of the oldest texts in history to mention ancient Indian gods. The dance show consists of six pieces, each of which is devoted to one of the goddesses.
The choreographer of the dance company and the main performer is Sharmistha Mukherjee, a famous Indian classical dancer. Before its performance in Kragujevac, the Indian dance company presented their show in Belgrade and Novi Sad, and in the past it visited many other countries like the U.S., Germany, Venezuela and China.
